Appalachian Mountain Club is the oldest outdoor group in the United States. Created in 1876 to explore and preserve the White Mountains in New Hampshire, it has expanded throughout the northeastern U.S., with 12 chapters stretching from Maine to Washington, D.C. We protect the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions through hands-on stewardship, scientific research, and public policy advocacy. Our staff and volunteers maintain and build more than 1,800 miles of trails on the East Coast, including segments of the Appalachian Trail. We advocate for land and water conservation, research environmental issues, and work with local and national policymakers to protect the outdoors. We believe that environmental protection must be driven by science. Our conservation team produces high-quality, peer-reviewed data and analysis on climate change.
